About
Our Department of Mathematics welcomes applicants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds who are eager to pursue advanced study and research. All applications must be submitted through the UConn Graduate School application portal, and we encourage prospective students to carefully review the Graduate Admission Requirements before applying.
Program Deadlines
- Ph.D. in Mathematics — December 15th
- M.S. in Mathematics (Pure or Applied Mathematics) — January 5th
- M.S. in Mathematics with Concentration in Actuarial Science — February 1st
- M.S. in Applied Financial Mathematics (All Concentrations) — T.B.A. (No Spring 2025 Admissions)
Applications are considered for entry in the fall semester only.
What do we look for?
We seek applicants who demonstrate strong academic preparation and clear potential for advanced study.
- Ph.D. in Mathematics — Applicants should have completed a solid undergraduate program in mathematics.
- Ph.D. in Mathematics with Thesis in Actuarial Science — A bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, quantitative economics, or a related quantitative field with an excellent GPA. While prior exposure to actuarial science, business, or finance is not required, a strong mathematics foundation is essential.
- M.S. Programs — A bachelor’s degree with a strong background in mathematics or a closely related field is recommended.
Our Department has a long history of welcoming and supporting international students, and we encourage their applications.
How to apply
A complete application includes:
- Three letters of recommendation (letters from academia are highly preferred).
- Personal statement (1–2 pages) describing what excites you about joining our graduate program and why you believe it's the right fit for you.
Ph.D. applicants looking to pursue a thesis in actuarial science should:
- choose mathematics as the field of study,
- make it clear in the personal statement that they are applying to the Ph.D. program with an interest in actuarial science,
- list a member of the Actuarial Science Research Group as a potential advisor.
GRE scores (including the mathematics subject test) and Third Party Credential Evaluation are not required for consideration.
