In Memoriam: Domina Spencer
We are saddened to report the news of the passing of Domina Eberle Spencer, Professor Emerita. Domina received her PhD in 1942 from MIT, writing a thesis on tensors and geometry. It was an era when few women were included in mathematics doctoral programs. Domina served on our faculty for many decades. Though I never […]

Mathematics REU Talk Series - Probabilistic Heuristics in Number Theory Speaker: Keith Conrad, University of Connecticut
Abstract: In this talk we'll discuss several examples of the way ideas from probability (such as independence and conditional probability) provide heuristic explanations for theorems and conjectures in number theory.Contact Information: rachel.bailey@uconn.edu

Mathematics REU Talk Series- Self-Affine Curves And Parameterization Dimension
Thursday, July 14th, 2022
01:30 PM - 02:30 PM
Storrs Campus MONT 313
Professor Matthew Badger will be giving a talk titled: "Self-affine curves and parameterization dimension."
Abstract: There are many possible ways to describe the dimension of a set of points, which sometimes agree and sometimes disagree. I will describe an example of the latter type, discovered in recent joint work with Vyron Vellis. While every set of points in the Euclidean plane has Hausdorff / Minkowski / Assouad / topological dimension at most 2, there exist curves in the plane (connected Bedford-McMullen carpets) with parameterization dimension bigger than 2. I'll explain this phenomenon and describe open problems about the parameterization dimension of generalized Menger sponges.Contact Information: rachel.bailey@uconn.edu

Professor Reed Solomon will be giving a talk titled "The Random Graph."
Abstract: To form a random infinite graph, you start an infinite set of vertices and flip a coin for each pair to determine whether to place an edge between them. This talk is about the graphs you get through this process. The story illustrates a nifty connection between probability, graph theory and logic.Contact Information: rachel.bailey@uconn.edu
