About
Our Department of Mathematics welcomes applicants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds who are eager to pursue advanced study and research. All applications must be submitted through the UConn Graduate School application portal, and we encourage prospective students to carefully review the Graduate Admission Requirements before applying.
Program Deadlines
- Ph.D. in Mathematics — December 15th
- M.S. in Mathematics — January 5th
- M.S. in Mathematics with Concentration in Actuarial Science — February 1st
- M.S. in Applied Financial Mathematics — February 1st
- M.S. in Applied Financial Mathematics with Concentration in Actuarial Science — February 1st
Applications are considered for entry in the fall semester only.
What do we look for?
We seek applicants who demonstrate strong academic preparation and clear potential for advanced study.
- Ph.D. in Mathematics — Applicants should have completed a solid undergraduate program in mathematics.
- Ph.D. in Mathematics with Thesis in Actuarial Science — A bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, quantitative economics, or a related quantitative field with an excellent GPA. While prior exposure to actuarial science, business, or finance is not required, a strong mathematics foundation is essential.
- M.S. Programs — A bachelor’s degree with a strong background in mathematics or a closely related field is recommended.

How to apply
A complete application includes:
- Three letters of recommendation (academic or professional)
- Personal statement (1–2 pages) describing your goals and motivation for joining our program
GRE scores (including the mathematics subject test) are not required for consideration.
PhD Actuarial Science applicants should select ‘Mathematics’ as the field of study, and note their actuarial focus and a potential Actuarial Research Group advisor in their personal statement.
