Directed Reading Program

About

The Directed Reading Program (DRP) is your chance to dive deep into mathematics with one-on-one guidance from a graduate student mentor. Each semester, undergraduates are matched with graduate mentors to explore exciting independent study projects tailored to their mathematical interests.

Here’s how it works:

  • Weekly meetings (about an hour) with your mentor – flexible and customized to your style. You might give mini-presentations, dive into informal lectures, work through exercises, or simply discuss ideas.
  • Independent study (at least 4 hours per week) – where you take ownership of your project.
  • Final presentation (15–20 minutes) – an accessible, big-picture talk at the end of the semester. The goal: inspire and share, not overwhelm with technicalities.

The DRP is about growth, curiosity, and exploration—not just ticking boxes.

Applications

We welcome applications for both spring and fall semesters through our online DRP Application Form.

What you’ll need to apply:

  • A reference
  • A short description of your mathematical interests
  • A list of courses you’ve taken

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Have completed Math 2710 or Math 2142Q
  • Be self-motivated and ready to commit to a semester-long project

If we receive more applications than available mentors, students with less background may be asked to re-apply next semester.

Past Projects

Most DRP projects are centered around a book or article, with mentors providing extra guidance and context along the way. Every mentee sets the pace, shaping their own learning journey.
