Mathematics Major (BA or BS)
A Flexible Plan of Study
The Mathematics major offers three concentrations: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics Teaching. All students complete a rigorous core that provides both a strong foundation and the flexibility to move between tracks as interests develop. Advanced coursework then builds depth within the chosen concentration. The major is offered as either a BA or BS, with identical departmental requirements, making it easy to choose the degree that best fits each student’s goals.
Pure Mathematics Concentration
The Pure Mathematics track focuses on abstract mathematical ideas and proofs (often called pure math). Required courses cover two fundamental areas of math: abstract algebra and analysis. Elective courses include (but are not limited to) combinatorics, complex variables, differential geometry, logic, number theory, probability, and topology.
Applied Mathematics Concentration
The Applied Mathematics track provides students with the skills to address problems in a variety of scientific, engineering, and industry fields. Required courses in this track focus on differential equations, numerical analysis, and mathematical modeling. Elective courses include (but are not limited to) complex variables, stochastic processes, the mathematics of machine learning, and others, depending on career goals and interests.
Mathematics Teaching Concentration
The Mathematics Teaching track is open to students in UConn’s Neag School of Education, aimed at future K–12 mathematics educators and mathematical education scholars. Students in this track take courses to broaden and deepen their mathematical preparation, thereby obtaining not only a strong foundation with which to effectively pass on their excitement and knowledge of mathematics to others, but also widening their opportunities within and outside education.

The Mathematics-Statistics Major combines rigorous mathematics with practical statistical skills, preparing students for a wide range of opportunities. The program is run jointly by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics. Students complete courses in each department, and gain hands-on experience through the possibility of research and internships.
The BA in Mathematics-Statistics offers maximum flexibility. With fewer science requirements, students can easily add a second major, pursue a minor, study abroad, or take advantage of research and internship opportunities.
The BS in Mathematics-Statistics emphasizes the quantitative sciences, ideal for students aiming to apply statistics in health-related or scientific fields. Its additional science courses are rigorous, but with careful planning, BS students can still explore double majors, minors, and global experiences.
Both degrees provide a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics—one focusing on flexibility, the other on deeper scientific preparation.
